Mistakes you’re making every time you wash your face!

Mistake 1: Not washing your face every night.

Sweat, pollution, oil, makeup and bacteria – make your face one of the dirtiest parts of your body. Which is why it is super important to wash it every night.

During the night, your skin goes into ‘repair mode’. When you clean it thoroughly, it can do a much better job of healing itself. When you don’t, you are likely to wake up with clogged pores, uneven skin tone, blemishes or rough skin.
So make sure to cleanse before you pass out!

Mistake 2: Not washing your hands before washing your face.

If your hands are dirty, how can your face get clean?
Wash your hands first, then wash your face. Otherwise you’re just putting bacteria on your face. Super gross!

Mistake 3: Using a regular cleanser to remove your makeup.

Your regular face wash isn’t going to do a good job removing your foundation and eye makeup. You may think you got it off, but some of it will still be hanging around – making your skin dull, uneven and even cause a breakout or two.

If you have any makeup on, use a makeup remover first. Then, follow it up with your normal cleanser.

Mistake 4: Using the wrong cleanser for your skin type.

Just because a cleanser works brilliantly for your friend, doesn’t mean it will work for you. That’s simply because your skin may be different from hers.

So you need to find a cleanser that’s meant just for your skin type. Only then, will it make a real difference to your skin.

Mistakes you make while washing your face

Mistake 5: Not spending enough time lathering and rubbing.

How long do you actually spend massaging the cleanser into your skin?
If your answer is “Less than a minute”, you’re doing it wrong!

Rubbing in a cleanser for a few seconds and then rinsing it off is just not enough to remove all the oil, dirt, bacteria and pollution from your skin.

You need to spend at least 1-2 minutes working the cleanser into your skin using gentle, circular motions.

Mistake 6: Overdoing the lathering and rubbing.

You know you’re overdoing it, if you rub really hard and rigorously and your skin looks a bit red after washing.

It’s bad for you because you’re literally hurting your skin’s natural barrier – the part that protects your skin from, well, everything.

When it gets weak and damaged, all the bad stuff (bacteria, pollution, dirt) can easily enter your skin – leading to loads of issues – from dryness to inflammation to acne.
So go easy. Be gentle and take your time.

How to wash your face the right way

Mistake 7: Not rinsing properly.

If you’ve got dull, uneven skin, chances are you’re not rinsing as much as you should.

You need to wash away every trace of the cleanser. If even a little is left behind, it can lead to dryness, dullness and clogged pores.

Tip: I rinse my face with water 20 times to make sure it’s completely clean. (It sounds like too much, but trust me, it really works!)

Mistake 8: Rubbing your face with a towel.

Never rub with a towel. Pat your skin gently.
When you rub, you pull your skin. In the long run, this leads to wrinkles. So just don’t.

Don't rub a towel on your skin

Mistake 9: Not changing your face towel every time you wash your face.

When you wipe your face with a towel, dead skin cells and some bacteria stick to it. The bacteria multiplies as you use the towel again day after day.
So every time you wash your face, you’re putting more bacteria back on it. Yuck!

Mistake 10: Washing more than twice a day

You should wash you face twice a day – once in the morning, once in the evening. However, you can squeeze in a third wash if you’ve been exercising or sweating too much.

You don’t need to wash it more than that. Even if your skin is oily or acne prone. Because if you do, you’re drying it out and weirdly your skin produces even more oil to make up for the loss of moisture. So you end up greasier than before.
