DO NOT: Wash your face too many times.
Most of us try to fight summer skin (read oily, sweaty, dirty skin) by washing our faces many times. BAD BAD BAD (did I mention BAD?) idea!!
Why????
Because the more you wash your face, the more oil your skin produces to make up for the loss of moisture. And you end up greasier than when you began!
What to do:
Wash your face no more than 3 times a day. And use a gentle face wash that cleans your skin but doesn’t strip it. Harsh facewashes will give you that squeaky clean feeling but they strip your skin of all oil (even the good stuff), making your skin work overtime to produce even more oil. Oh no, not again!!
Stuff I ♥: La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel is my summer go-to product. It deep cleans my greasy skin and leaves it fresh and soft – never too dry!
DO NOT: Skip the moisturizer.
In summer, your skin gets all hot and sweaty. It also gets thirsty. Just like you do.
But here’s the problem. Instead of giving it water (aka moisture), you stop applying moisturizer. Now your skin is super thirsty and starts producing more oil to make up for the loss of moisture. And you end up with oilier skin!
What to do:
When I say your skin needs ‘moisture’, I mean water. Not oil.
So all you need is an oil-free lotion or gel (I prefer gels as they are lighter) that will hydrate your skin, but won’t clog your pores. Once your skin’s thirst is quenched, it won’t need to produce so much oil anymore. And your skin will become less oily. Simple.
Stuff I ❤️: Forest Essentials Light Hydrating Facial Gel is perfect for a hot summer. It’s super light, gets absorbed in a few seconds and leaves my skin feeling cool and hydrated.
DO NOT: Forget to wear sunglasses when you’re out.
Did you know that sunglasses are great for skin? How??
When you don’t wear sunglasses, you tend to frown and squint. Do this often enough, and you’re on your way to getting fine lines and wrinkles!
What to do:
Wear sunglasses. The bigger the better.
DO NOT: Think that you don’t need a sunscreen because your day cream (or BB cream or foundation) already has SPF.
You need a small coin sized amount of sunscreen to protect your face. Anything less and you’re not covered from the damaging sun rays. Most of us use no more than a pea-sized amount of day cream, BB cream or foundation. That’s no protection at all!
What to do?
Use a coin-sized amount of sunscreen every single day. Pick one that has SPF 30 or more.
Don’t worry about your sunscreen making you feel greasy, sweaty and hot. There are amazing new formulas that are super light and mattify your skin too.
Stuff I ❤️: Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection WetForce SPF 50+ glides on my skin, leaving it smooth and matte. And it’s brilliant in water too – perfect for a day by the pool.
DO NOT: Use acne products in the day.
If you tend to breakout in summer, chances are you use an acne treatment to fight those pesky pimples. But acne products contain ingredients that make your skin sensitive to the sun. This means, your skin is now more likely to burn, get spots and pigmentation.
What to do:
Use acne products only at night. And never ever step out without a sunscreen. Pick an oil-free sheer, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) sunscreen that will protect your skin without making it greasy.
There you have it! Now be a good girl alright? 😉
