Ok, so every time I pick up a beauty magazine some celeb or another says their beauty secret is “I drink a lot of water”! And I’m always like “That’s such BS!” You obviously don’t want people to know your beauty secrets so you’re resorting to this age-old crappy line.
But then, after seeing it repeated again and again and again by beautiful-skinned celebs like Kim Kardashian, Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif, Rihanna, Jennifer Aniston, Victoria Beckham, Deepika Padukone, Paris Hilton, Beyonce, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Miranda Kerr, etc etc… I thought, maybe, just maybe, there’s some truth in it. Maybe it does give you skin that glows as if you switched on a lightbulb inside. But how can I be absolutely sure? There’s only one way to find out… I’m taking the WATER CHALLENGE!!!
What’s the heck is the Water Challenge?
Well, for the next 3 weeks, I’m going to drink insane amounts of water – a minimum of 4 litres! And I’m going to keep everything else constant – so no changing any current beauty product. This way, I’ll know if it’s actually the water and not some cool new serum that’s doing the trick.
And when I say “drinking water”, I mean just drinking plain water.
Teas, sodas, juices, soups don’t count.
You can however, make it more fun by adding natural flavours, like squeezing some lemon juice in a glass of water, or adding fresh fruits (think citrus fruits or berries) or even herbs (like mint or lemongrass)…yum!
The bottom line is to drink 4 litres of water everyday.
FAQ: Does coconut water count as drinking water?
Yes, it does! Coconut water is basically water with nutritious minerals and vitamins. But remember it’s also got natural sugars so don’t overdo it. One coconut a day is more than enough!
How to do it?
Keep a bottle everywhere.
By your bedside (so you can drink water first thing in the morning).
On your desk (so you don’t forget to drink as you work).
In your bathroom (yeah seriously! So every time you use the bathroom, you take a ‘replenish’).
In your car (no more traffic-light boredom!)
In the gym (ok, this one is a no-brainer).
In your bag (so you don’t have an excuse!)
And remember to fill it up regularly!
Tip: If you drink your entire daily amount of water in one sitting, you will basically be peeing most of it out. It won’t benefit you that much as sipping it all through the day – where it’s absorbed and utilised slowly. So pace yourself.
Why it could actually work!
Did you know that water reaches all your other organs before it reaches your skin? This means that if you don’t drink enough water, your skin won’t get the hydration it needs! Dehydrated skin equals skin problems from dullness to uneven skin tone to dryness to fine lines & wrinkles to even oiliness! So drinking more water translates into having better skin. Common sense actually!
We all know that water helps to eliminate toxins from our body. So by drinking more water, you are literally flushing the rubbish out of your body. Clean on the inside means clean on the outside. Many women claim that their acne reduced majorly after they started drinking more water regularly.
Drinking more water also reduces water retention. So if you’ve got puffy under-eye bags, drinking more water may just be the answer!
